Awesome compressor for almost everything
I tried it for 14 days on a lot of things like for mastering, on busses (drums, mix) and on solo tracks: lead vocals, bass, background vocal groups, acoustic guitars, snare.... etc.
All I can say is WOW!!!!! It shines so many different sources and is very versatile. It definitely has some mojo in it - you can it very smooth or hard and aggressive and its very easy to set up - a few seconds and I have the sound that I want !!
Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

inconspicuous but very effective
in my opinion the opto compressor gives a very subtle colour - the vca compressor is very snappy - I like the combiniation of the two compressors - in addition to the three output transformer modes you get a very well and smooth compressed signal

I am in the demo stage on this one and I'm definitely not impressed--why is this?
1) The control panel is laid out in a very confusing manner, with numbers and dial indicators way tiny and confusing to read.
2) Quite simply it's so "all or nothing" in its treatment of sound that I'd rather master through my Boss Compressor foot pedal for guitar that I've had since I was in a 1980s big-hair band.
3) It doesn't play nice with other plug ins. I can combine an ATR-102, for example, with all manner of compressors and limiters, but not this one.
Skip this plug-in and go for something more user friendly and sonicall superior, like the UAD multi-band.

Great sounding plugin and very versatile
This thing is jaw dropping! I obtain great results on everything: drums, guitars, voice, and mix buss. The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor is very versatile and very easy to use. I am using daily on a rock project I am working on right now. Keep up the great work!

I'd pay $50.00 for the plugin, but over 200? Seriously? The emperor is naked!
This plugin was difficult to decide. I've happily paid for some expensive UAD plugins, but even in UA''s promo video the plugin and the analog unit did not sound comparable side by side. Not even close. I think that the GUI is so cool that it blinds users to exactly how mediocre this plugin is, and its slick appearance is undoubtedly a reason for its popularity. I tried a few presets and tweaks, and although the plugin would probably be useful, I don't see what it gives me over and above the plugins that I already own. With UAD plugins, the Precision Multiband and Precision Maximizer do the trick pretty well. For this money, you're better off buying Izotope Ozone 5.

Thanx...
Thanx for this very good job...., I allready was a very satisfied UA user with a lot of hardware and pluginns using , but now I purchased the SHMC, I have to let you know that I'm so very, very, pleased. For a long time I was searching for that kind off finish to my recordings which I did never really found, and didn't know exactly where to look for what I had in mind, but with the SHMC I found it...... Perfect glue to the mix/master..... Impossible for the money I would say, but on the other hand we do earn it maybe sometimes in this crazy expensive world/ hobby to get a present. Thx again.

I use it for color
It's fantastic!
I havn't mastered using it on the 2-bus yet but I use it all the time for color.
Demo this guy out and see if you can live without it... I didn't want to!

Mastering Magic
I don't just use this for mastering. I use it everywhere! The presets are a fantastic starting place for so many of my tracks - drums, vocals and then I just nudge it in the right direction for the piece I'm working on. It works in a really transparent way with no strange artefacts. Brilliant and well worth it,.

Disappointment
Demoed the SH Mastering compressor, but was really disappointed. Didn't sound as good as expected. In fact, it didn't do anything that I liked. GUI looks weird too on my 27" screen. Given the high price and DSP usage, this is a real downer.

The hardware does sound better than the plug in. With that being said, does the Shadow Hills plug in improve the overall sound of your mixes? If used right, the answer is a clear yes. The presets offer great options to start with, and then you can fine tune things. The opto can generally smooth things a little while the 2nd comp adds some punch. At the mastering stage I like a compressor that can gently control the transients while still letting the music breathe. I use the Samplitude Ammuntion opto compressor plug in for mastering which I love. It offers more control over the Shadow Hills opto comp. However the dual comp Shadow can do some things the Ammuntion cannot. The Shadow Hills won't replace Amm, but it can be a second tool to use.

Awesome character
Using this chain: Ampex ATR 102, Shadows hills mastering comp, Manley eq and Precision limiter the results were amazing! I had to use very little eq.
To get the same results without the Ampex and shadow hills required a lot more eq and it didn't sound as big....For me this is the way to go from now on.

Add the touch of magic you are looking for
This is a great plug in to use, presets are a great starting point, I find it very musical, effect can be subtle or drastic. Feedback from my clients for the work I mastered for them using this was tool was the clincher for me!
I am looking forward to my adventures with this tool in my kit.

Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Plug-In
The most perfect plug-in for gluing everything in a mix .
It gives the mix a special masking that I have never experienced before.
I use it in mastering , on vocals and voice over recordings and it does MAGIC.

Compression with personality
It does remind me a bit of the hardware. Lots of sonic character and the optional dirt & grit. Its easy to get carried away with. The digital realm needs plug-ins like these. Put it in line with your mastering software and wash the sterile out of your projects.

Very good indeed
Last year I bought decent hardware compressor which I use mainly for mastering purposes. I have noticed the difference and I thought that soft compressor will not be useful for critical instances in my studio anymore. I was wrong.
This compressor blew me out. Closest to the hardware I have ever seen. Very versatile with the nickel / iron / steel switch, which reminds me the "iron" switch in Joemeek compressor. But it can also sound vesy subtle with the "nickel" on. Very musical sounding. I am not sure if it can replace a 2K$ hardware but it is the best software compressor on the market.
