Session Notes
In this Apollo Artist Session, watch and hear producer/engineer Fab Dupont (Jennifer Lopez, Mark Ronson) as he records Liza Colby's "Open Eyed" exclusively through the first generation Apollo FireWire audio interface with Realtime UAD Processing and a UA 4-710d Four-Channel Tone-Blending Mic Preamp.
To get a fat, soulful sound on the drums, Dupont used Beyerdynamic M88 TG on the kick, a Shure SM57 on the snare, and a pair of Lauten Atlantis FC-387s on the overheads. The congas were captured with a Sennheiser MD 421 and Colby’s vocals were tracked with a Lauten Atlantis FC-387. The bass guitar and Wurlitzer were recorded direct through the Apollo’s front-panel Hi-Z inputs.
Dupont also used a Neve® 1073® EQ plug-in on the kick and snare without the EQ engaged, just using its high-pass filter for clarity. The same went for bass guitar, which used the high-pass filter on the Harrison 32C EQ plug-in — rounded out with a bit of warm compression from the Teletronix LA-2A Limiting Amplifier plug-in at mixdown. The Wurlitzer sports the MXR Flanger/Doubler plug-in for a touch of modulation, as well as the EP-34 Tape Echo and Ampex ATR-102 Tape Recorder for some final analog polish.
